The morning sun poured gently over the courtyard walls, but Meera felt a coldness wrapped around her heart. Her hands had been busy since before dawn — scrubbing brass pots, kneading dough, fetching water — yet her mind wandered.

She was tired. Not just of the work — of the silence she had been swallowing every single day.
